Protecting a population of guanacos
The Parc zoologique de Paris is helping to preserve the Guanaco species, a wild camelid native to South America.
The Patagonia biozone is home to a group of 3 female guanacos, wild camelids. In Chile, this species is threatened by genetic pollution through natural hybridisation with domestic llamas. In order to preserve the wild guanacos and prevent their extinction, it is important to limit the reproduction of hybrids by sterilising them, while retaining the existing herd, which helps to clear the scrub around Santiago, thereby limiting the risk of forest fires. The sterilisation mission would involve identifying the hybrids, sterilising them, taking genetic samples and releasing them.
