Encouraging cohabitation with hapalemurs

The Parc zoologique de Paris is taking part in a breeding programme and contributing to the in situ conservation of the Great Hapalemur, a species of lemur endemic to the island of Madagascar.

The great hapalemur, a lemur from the island of Madagascar, is in critical danger of extinction, with an estimated wild population of 1,000 individuals. The species is well known to the zoo, which is home to a group of 6 individuals, including several females born at the park.

The zoo is involved in a breeding programme and contributes to in situ conservation by financially supporting the work of the Helpsimus association, which carries out field inventories, scientific monitoring of the species, habitat protection, development aid for villages near groups of great hapalemurs and education programmes. The aid also contributes to the preservation of other species, in particular microcebes (a species not present in the zoo).
